You come home to find standing water. What do you do? Here are a few ideas on what to do until help arrives:

1. If you can find the source of water, turn it off to prevent further damage.

2. Safety first – Never step into a flooded room if the water is high enough to reach electrical outlets, appliances or cords. If you are safely able to do so, shut the power off at the breaker box. If you must stand in water to do so, don’t. Contact your electric utility company to shut off the power at the meter.

3. Take photos of everything in place as it was when you first arrived to your home.

4. Act quickly and remove any contents you can safely move that are sitting in water.

5. Contact a restoration company to help dry out the structure.

6. Contact your insurance company to start a claim.

7. If the damage was caused by a sewer line back up, do not touch sewage or grossly contaminated contents. Leave this to the professionals. They have the proper protective gear to handle affected materials.

8. Remove excess water by mopping, blotting or via squeegee.

9. Remove colorful rugs from wet carpet in order to prevent staining.

10. Place plastic or aluminum between furniture legs and wet carpet.

11. Keep out of rooms where the ceilings are sagging.

Being proactive expedites drying and minimizes damage so you can get back to your normal life.
